Because reading is among our greatest freedoms and is essential to our democracy

Because the freedom to read is protected by our Constitution and privacy is essential to that freedom, without having our interest scrutinized by others

Because we can be trusted to exercise critical judgment, to recognize propaganda and misinformation, to make our own decisions about what we read and believe, and to exercise the responsibility that comes with that freedom

Because each year, the American Library Association’s Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to choose our reading material even if the book is unorthodox or unpopular and emphasizes making such material available to anyone interested in reading it

And to counter the practice of censorship

We, the John Tyler Community College Library, resolve to celebrate Banned Books Week September 23-29, 2018.

We encourage all free people to read freely, now and forever.
